AIHEC STUDENT CONGRESS – OUTSTANDING STUDENT OF THE YEAR. Funded by the American Indian College Fund and the Castle Rock Foundation, this scholarship is awarded to recognize and award one outstanding student from each of the 33 tribal colleges to create an initiative for student excellence. To qualify, the applicant must be enrolled in at least 6 credits; must have earned a minimum 3.00 gpa; must demonstrate financial need; can not have previously earned an associate degree (if enrolled in an associate program) or a bachelor’s degree (if enrolled in a baccalaureate program); community service and volunteer work will be considered. Deadline date is February 14. Applications are available at the SBC Financial Aid Office.

AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND ASSOCIATION. Provides scholarships and loans to Native American students. To obtain an application, write to American Indian Scholarship Fund, 1508 Crossroads of the World, Los Angeles, CA 90020.

AMERICAN INDIAN SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP (AIS). AIS of Utah has funds available to assist Native American students. Students should call 801-375-1777 or request an application in writing to AIS, 950 N. University Ave, Provo, Utah 84604. Applications are available at the SBC Financial Aid Office.

ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN INDIAN AFFAIRS (AAIA). The AAIA has several scholarships available as described below. Applications may be downloaded at the following web site

  • Adolph Van Pelt Scholarship. This scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students in amounts ranging from $500 to $800. The program is based on financial need and merit. Grants are paid directly to accredited educational institutions. The monies can be used for tuition, books, and other academic-related expenses.

    Students are chosen on the basis of their application, an essay, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation as well as proof of Native American heritage. The blood quantum requirement is a condition set down by the donor of this scholarship.

    A grant is renewable for up to four years of support towards any one degree. Each year the grant is renewed, $100 is added to the student's scholarship. Applications are due August 15 of each year.
  • Displaced Homemaker Scholarship. This scholarship is based on financial need. It is designed to assist Native American students with childcare, transportation, and some basic living expenses. The priority date for funding is August 15.
  • Emergency Aid and Health Professions Scholarship. This scholarship is available in amounts usually ranging from $50 to $400 during the academic school year. The program is for full-time undergraduate students only; is based on financial need; and is limited by the availability of scholarship funds. Students may only receive one scholarship per academic year. There are no deadlines for applying.
  • Norman M. Crooks Memorial Scholarship. Grants are $1,000 and honor a man who helped his people. These scholarships are geared towards students planning to return to their communities, both reservation and urban. Applications are due August 15th.

BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP. Available to full-time sophomores or juniors pursuing a degree in science, mathematics, or engineering. Applicant must have a 3.00 GPA, be a US citizen or resident alien, and must be nominated by the SBC faculty representative. Deadline date is February 1. BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN'S (BPW) FOUNDATION EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. The BPW offers scholarships and loans to non-traditional female students with critical financial need who are seeking education necessary for entry or re-entry into the work force. The following are available:

  • AVON Products Foundation Scholarship Program provides scholarships of $1,000 for full-time or part-time programs at the undergraduate and graduate level in a business-related field.
  • Career Advancement Scholarship Program which provides scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 for programs in the fields of computer science, teacher education, paralegal studies, engineering, science, or professional degrees.
  • New York Life Foundation Scholarship for Women in the Health Professions provides scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 for full-time or part-time programs at the undergraduate level in a health-care field.

Deadline for applying for these scholarships and loans is APRIL 15. Students should request applications between October 1 and April 1 by writing to the Scholarships/Loans, BPW Foundation, 2012 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington DC 20036.

CERA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. CERA provides students the opportunity to win a $500 scholarship for submission of an original poetry composition. The entrant must be a college or university enrolled student. Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: 25% content, 25% form, 25% language use; 25% style. To enter, mail the poem by FEBRUARY 28 to CERA Scholarship, PO Box 1889, Fremont, CA 94538-0188.

COCA-COLA TWO-YEAR SCHOLARS PROGRAM. Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is sponsoring 400 scholarships ($1,000 each) nationwide for students who have completed 100 hours of unpaid community service within the past 12 months. Students must be US citizens or permanent residents who have earned a minimum 2.50 GPA and who plan to enroll in at least 6 credits during the next term. Nomination forms are available at the SBC Financial Aid Office during the month of June. Deadline date to apply is May 31. COCA-COLA FIRST GENERATION SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship is available to high school graduates who are the first in their immediate family to pursue a college degree. The program provides a tuition scholarship for the full academic year to one freshman at SBC. To qualify, the student must be enrolled full-time; maintain a 3.0 average during college to retain the award; show involvement and leadership in campus and community activities. Applications may be picked up at the SBC Financial Aid Office. Deadline dare to apply is September.

CONTINENTAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF INDIAN WARS SCHOLARSHIP. A $500 award is available to certified tribal members enrolled in an undergraduate education or social services program; student must plan to work on a reservation. Deadline date is in June. To obtain an application, write to Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars Scholarship, 206 Springdale Drive, LaGranga, GA 30240.

DAKOTA INDIAN FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP (DIFS). The DIFS was established to further educational advancement of aspiring American Indian students with priority given to those of Sioux heritage. This is a $500 per term scholarship for undergraduate or graduate students who have a minimum 2.00 GPA. Deadline dates are August 1 for Fall and January 1 for Spring term.

ETHEL AND EMERY FAST SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to qualified Native Americans enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a post-secondary educational institution. An applicant must be a Native American enrolled in a federally-recognized tribe; have successfully completed one year of post-secondary education at an accredited college or university; be currently enrolled in same as a full-time student in good standing; and demonstrate financial need. The deadline dates for applying are August 15 for Fall semester and December 15 for Spring semester. Applications can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office.

FORD/AMERICAN INDIAN COLLEGE FUND CORPORATE SCHOLARS PROGRAM. This scholarship is available to American Indian students who attend A*CF accredited member tribal colleges and universities. Each need-based scholarship, up to $5,000 per year, can be renewed annually as long as the student continues to meet the program’s requirements. To qualify, students must have at least a 3.00 gpa; attend a tribal college or university; be sophomore status or higher with a declared major in math, science, engineering, business, teacher training, or environmental science; demonstrate leadership and commitment to the American Indian community; be American Indian/Alaska Native with proof of enrollment or descendancy; and submit the FAFSA. GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship is intended to increase the number of African-Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Americans, and Hispanic Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs in disciplines where ethnic and racial groups are currently underrepresented. To qualify, a student must have a cumulative 3.3 grade point average; must be accepted into an accredited college or university; have significant financial need; have demonstrated leadership ability through participation in community service, extra-curricular activities, or other activities. HIGHER EDUCATION RESOURCE ORGANIZATION FOR STUDENTS (HEROS) SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship is available to students enrolled full-time in a North Dakota institute of higher education who has earned a minimum 3.00 grade point average or better and who is an enrolled member of a tribe. Up to seven $100 scholarships are available: one per North Dakota reservation; one for any other federally recognized tribe; one for incoming freshman who have just recently graduated from high school; and one for a graduate student. Deadline date to apply is September 30. Applications may be picked up from the SBC Financial Aid Office.

INDIAN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. Fellowship grants are awarded to Indian students to pursue course of study leading to undergraduate degree in business or administration, engineering, or natural resources and related fields. Applications may be obtained by writing to Indian Fellowship Program, 400 Maryland Ave SW, Portals Building, Room 4300, Washington DC 20202.

INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (IHSSP). The IHSSP is available to conduct three inter-related scholarship programs to train the health professional personnel necessary to staff IHS health programs and other health programs serving the Indian people. To obtain an application, write to Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service, Federal Building, Room 309, Attn: 437 Scholarship Coordinator, Aberdeen, SD.

INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF THE KING'S DAUGHTERS AND SONS, INC. provides a $500 grant to Native American students enrolled in a technical, vocational, or undergraduate level course of study. Students must request an application between September 1 and March 1 by writing to Mrs. Harry E. Stuard, Jr, 5451 Cameo Court, Pleasanton CA 94588 or by calling 1-510-847-0105. Deadline date is June.

MASSACHUSETTS INDIAN ASSOCIATION. This is a scholarship for undergraduate or graduate students. Deadline date is September 15. To obtain an application, write to Massachusetts Indian Association, 245 Rockland Road, Carlisle, MA 01741. Applications may also be picked up at the SBC Financial Aid Office.

NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION provides a one-time award of $500 to Native Americans based on financial need, academic achievement, and ambition. Students must have a 2.75 GPA. Deadline date for applying is August 1 for Fall term and December 1 for Spring term. Applications are available at the Financial Aid Office or by writing to Mrs. Lyle A. NATIVE AMERICAN EDUCATION GRANTS. Scholarships ($200 to $2,000) are available to students who meet the following criteria: preference to members of Presbyterian Church (membership not required); US citizen or permanent resident; enrolled full-time at an accredited institution in the United States; making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree; demonstrate financial need; photocopy of tribal identification card. NATIVE AMERICAN FINANCE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND. This scholarship is for students who are majoring in Finance, Accounting, Business Management or Business Administration who have a minimum 2.8 grade point average. Deadline date to apply is May 1. NATIVE AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides financial assistance for American Indians in fields that are critical for the political, social, and business development of Indian tribes. Scholarships are not need-based but are awarded on merit and on the student's ability to most likely improve the lives of Indian people.

  • GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM is a program for high potential Native Americans enrolled in college course at the bachelor, masters or doctorate level who have excellent grades, high SAT or ACT scores, some work experience, a track record of leadership, and a strong commitment to their Indian community.
  • MESBEC (Math, Engineering, Science, Business, Education, and Computers) is a program for high potential Native Americans planning to study in these fields. Maximum award is $5,000 per year..
  • NALE (Native American Leadership in Education) is for high potential para-professional Native Americans who plan to complete their degrees and obtain credentials as teachers, counselors, or administrators.

NATIVE AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. Up to $2,500 per year is awarded to Native American high school seniors who have at least 1/4 Indian blood. The deadline date is March 15. Applications are available by writing to the Native American Scholarship Program, Santa Fe Pacific Foundation, 1630 30th St. Suite 301, Boulder, CO 80301 or by calling 1-303-492-8658.

NORTH DAKOTA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (NDEA) SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship assists students who want to enter the profession of teaching. One $500 scholarship is awarded annually upon the recommendation of the NDEA Foundation. The applicant must be an undergraduate student in good standing with a 3.00 gpa; must be enrolled in a North Dakota institution of higher education; must be enrolled in a teacher education program; must be prepared in a professional manner. An application may be obtained from the ND Education Association, Box 5005, Bismarck, ND 58502-5005. An application may be obtained from the SBC Financial Aid Office. Deadline date is March 15.

NORTH DAKOTA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (NDEA) MINORITY AFFAIRS SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship assists minorities who want to enter the profession of teaching. Two $500 scholarships are awarded annually upon the recommendation of the NDEA Minority Affairs Commission – one from a University and one from a Tribal College. The applicant must be a minority undergraduate student in good standing; must be enrolled in a North Dakota institution of higher education; must be enrolled in a teacher education program. An application may be obtained from the ND Education Association, Box 5005, Bismarck, ND 58502-5005. An application may be obtained from the SBC Financial Aid Office. Deadline date is March 15.

NORTH DAKOTA PARENT TEACHERS ASSOCIATION (PTA) SCHOLARSHIP. The ND Congress of Parents and Teachers sponsors the ND PTA Scholarship. Applicants must be in their sophomore or junior years and must apply by March 31. This is a $500 scholarship per 12-month period. The applicant must be a resident of North Dakota preparing to teach at the primary or secondary level. Applicants must write a response to the question: "What is your goal as a teacher and how do you assess your ability to achieve that goal?" Applicants may be obtained by contacting the ND Congress of Parents and Teachers, State Office, 810 Divide Avenue, Bismarck, ND 58501.

NORTH DAKOTA WOMEN'S OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP FUND. The North Dakota Council on Abused Women's Services sponsors this scholarship. The intent is to provide a means by which low-income women in North Dakota can pursue a higher education in North Dakota schools. The applicant must be a North Dakota resident and enrolled in a North Dakota college; must be under the financial guidelines established for 125% of poverty; must have a completed application on file by July 15; must enroll full-time in an undergraduate academic degree or professional certification; must submit three letters of reference for the scholarship. Scholarship recipients will be notified of scholarship awards in August.

OBAN (Bill) SPECIAL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP. This $500 scholarship will be awarded by the NDEA Foundation to an outstanding student who is preparing for a career in special education. To qualify, student must be a full-time undergraduate student in a teacher education program, preparing for a career in Special Education; maintained a mininum 3.00 gpa; and maintain membership in the NEA Student Program. Deadline date to apply is March 15. PACKARD FOUNDATION TRIBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM. The purpose of this program is to increase the number of American Indians who pursue careers in science or engineering or become leaders in the technical and economic development of their tribes. Ten $20,000 scholarships will be available each year to be disbursed over a two-year period. Applicant must earn a two-year degree at a tribal college with a grade point average of 3.00 or better and must be nominated by college personnel. Deadline date is November 30. ROUILLARD (JOHN) MEMORIAL $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP. The National Indian Education Association (NIEA) sponsors this scholarship. Applications may be obtained by writing to NIEA Awards Committee, 1819 -11 Street NW, Suite 800, Washington DC 20006.

STRAWS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION/BISON MANAGEMENT SCHOLARSHIP. The focus of this scholarship is to expand opportunities for American Indians through restoration of the natural prairie environment of the Great Plains. The scholarship is available to tribal college students pursuing career goals in bison management/restoration, range management, or closely-related fields. To qualify, student must have completed at least one year of college; be enrolled as a full-time student; possess a 2.5 or higher cumulative gpa; major in bison management, agriculture related to bison/grassland restoration, or environmental conservation; be interested in the cultural aspects of the bison in tribal life; and be American Indian/Alaska Native with proof of enrollment or descendancy. THROLSON AMERICAN BISON FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship has been established to recognize, encourage, and promote leadership among future bison industry professionals. Two scholarships ($1,000 and $2,000) will be awarded to two individuals who meet the following criteria: be an undergraduate with junior or senior standing (completed a minimum of 72 semester hours or 108 quarter hours) or a graduate student in a recognized livestock, animal science, veterinary, or agriculture program in the United States or Canada; have at least one semester or two quarters remaining in their degree plan; be scheduled to be enrolled as a full-time student for the following term. TYLENOL SCHOLARSHIP FUND. The Tylenol Scholarship Fund was developed by Tylenol and Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America to students based on the leadership activities, academic record, and a clear statement of their educational and career goals. US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. Fellowships of $600 to $24,000 are available for American Indian or Native Alaskan undergraduate or graduate students studying education, psychology, guidance counseling, or a related field. VETERANS BENEFITS. Veterans of active military service should contact their local Veterans Administration Office. Courses offered by SBC may be approved for veteran students. Veteran students receiving education benefits must comply with the policies, procedures, and regulations of the Veterans Administration and the college. VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION (Voc.Rehab). The Voc.Rehab program is intended to assist students who have disabilities to become active members of the labor market. Students who think they may qualify are encouraged to contact one of the nearest Voc.Rehab offices: Sitting Bull College Voc.Rehab, North Dakota State Voc.Rehab, or South Dakota State Voc.Rehab.

WEST RIVER TELEPHONE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP. The West River Telephone Corporation sponsors three $500 scholarships to help students from their current subscribers. The scholarships are payable upon the successful completion of one term and proof of enrollment in the next semester in college. Applications may be obtained by contacting West River Telephone Corporation in Hazen, ND. Date of application is in March.
