SPRING 2024 DIVISION CHAMPIONS IN VALORANT & 2ND PLACE FINALISTS IN RAINBOW SIX SIEGE!
E-Sports @ Sitting Bull College
The coed e-sports program at Sitting Bull College provides students with the opportunity to compete in some of the latest competitive video and computer games. We are members of NECC (National Esports Collegiate Conference). Students of all skill levels are welcome to participate though some might not be part of the starting lineup for competition depending on ability.
What are e-sports?
E-Sports are competitive video gaming.
There are many kinds of competitive video gaming including fastest speed, highest score & player vs. player.
Collegiate e-sports is generally all about player vs. player competition. Teams usually play remotely through the internet. This allows us to play against teams that are further away than we would otherwise be able to such as teams in Guam & Puerto Rico.
We have gaming options for 1v1, 2 v 49 other two player teams, 3v3, 4v4, & 5v5 team competitions.

Valorant
This is a first-person tactical hero shooter. This means each character the player can choose has their own abilities that can be used for tactical advantage in the match. It is also important that proper items and weapons are bought at the start of each round to be used strategically. The chosen character (agent) is used throughout the match when defending or attacking. Players work together on teams of five to try to eliminate the other team, prevent the other team from planting the spike in time or disarm the enemy spike before it goes off when defending. When attacking, teams try to eliminate the other team or plant their own spike and have it go off before the other team can disarm the spike. Players generally need to maintain certain roles so they can work together effectively and good communication and teamwork are key to winning. You must win a total of at least 13 rounds to win a match. If both teams tie at 12 to 12 the match goes into overtime and one team must come ahead by two rounds to win. The maps used for each match are decided upon through a series of bans from each team. Running and gunning is not effective. You must stop moving to aim well. The first to win the best of 3 matches is the winner for that day's competition.

Rainbow Six Siege
This is a first-person tactical hero shooter. This means each character the player can choose has their own abilities that can be used for tactical advantage in the match. It is also important that proper items and weapons are chosen at the start of each round to be used strategically. A character (operator) is chosen at the beginning of each round. There are different operators to choose from when attacking or defending. Players work together on teams of five to try to eliminate the other team or disarm the bomb with the defuser in time when attacking. When defending, teams try to prevent the other team from planting the defuser (including by eliminating the other team before they can plant the defuser) or deactivate the defuser in time so the defender's bombs can go off. Players generally need to maintain certain roles so they can work together effectively and good communication and teamwork are key to winning. In the first minute of this game, attackers send out drones and try to find the location of the defender's bombs. The defenders try to set up defenses against the attackers & take out the drones before they can find the bombs. Player controls are more complicated and dynamic than most first-person shooters; laying down, laying back, crouching and leaning to the side are important when mastering the game. You must win a total of at least 7 rounds to win a match. If both teams tie at 6 to 6, the match goes into overtime and the first team to win 8 rounds wins. The maps used for each match are decided upon through a series of bans from each team. Also, one attacking & one defending operator can be banned by each team for a total of 4 operators banned per match. Running and gunning is not effective. You must stop moving to aim well. The first to win the best of 3 matches is the winner for that day's competition.

DIVISION FINALISTS - 2nd Place - Spring 2024
Rocket League
This game is also called 'soccar' as in soccer with cars played in a 3v3 format. However, all cars have a rocket boost and jump that allows you to speed up and jump high into the air. This allows for trick passes, blocks and shots while flying through the air and can be quite challenging to master and a lot of fun to play. Just like in soccer, you attempt to score by shooting the ball into the goal. Unlike soccer, there is no out of bounds. Also, unlike soccer & more like football, you can slam straight into your opponent to block them or blow them up & remove them from play for a moment. The team with the highest score wins. If tied the game goes to sudden death overtime where whichever team scores first, wins the match. This is a best of 3 competition except in playoffs where it changes to best of 5.

DIVISION PLAYOFFS - Spring 2024
DIVISION PLAYOFFS - Fall 2023
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
A fighting game featuring characters from a number of games that have appeared on various Nintendo consoles. This game features interesting match-ups such as Sonic vs. Megaman or Princess Peach vs. Persona 5 Joker. You use moves based on the abilities they had in the games they appeared in. This game is played in teams of 4v4 in a crew-style competition. One player at a time goes up against one player on the other team. Once one player loses 3 lives they lose and a different player must play the winner. The winner must start with the same number of lives they had at the end of the last battle against the first player. Both teams try to eliminate all 4 of the other teams players. Players can lose lives from being damaged so much that they fly off the map on their last hit or by being pushed out of bounds to the side, toward the bottom, or toward the top. Unlike Super Smash Bros. Melee, throwing opponents to the side is less effective while spiking them downward when over a pit is more effective. There are a limited set of valid stages to choose from & the stage choice is made through a series of bans by each team until a final stage is chosen. As stated above, each player on each team has a stock of 3 for a total of 12 stock per team. The losing team will aways end up with 0 stock at the end. Best of 3 matches.

COMPETED - Fall 2023
Fortnite - Duos
This is a battle royale game. Teams try to survive till the end & take out all other opponents. In the duos format we compete in, teams of 2 play against 49 other teams of 2. We can have multiple teams. While they can personalize their skins in the game, all characters are essentially the same.
You have to work together, communicating clearly & strategizing to trap and attack opponents. If at least one player on a team survives till the end, your team wins. You can use strategies on what weapons and items you want to use but you have to find them. The meta strategies for vehicles, weapons & items change throughout the season. You might have flying broom sticks during one week of matches & ninja turtle swords during another one. Players enter the island diving off a flying bus & can basically start wherever they choose on the map. They are vulnerable to attack as soon as they land. Also, there is a storm encircling the island. It gradually closes in to a smaller and smaller circle and later shifts position too. The middle of this circle serves as a safe eye of the storm region. If you are in the storm itself, outside the circle, you receive damage. Each round of the circle shrinking also makes the damage from the storm area become more severe. Running & gunning, moving while you shoot, is effective in this game. This game is played in the form of tournaments on the weekend. There are both Build and Zero Build tournaments. Build tournaments are different in that you can gather materials to build walls, stairs, forts and towers to help you defend, gain position and win. Zero build only has the weapons and items. There are 3 qualifier build & 3 qualifier zero build tournaments per season. Each tournament consists of 4 matches. Teams earn 1 point per elimination of an opponent. Teams also earn 25 pts for winning, 20 pts for second, & 16 pts for third. Fourth through seventeenth place earn points running from 14 for fourth down to 1 for seventeenth. Other placements earn no points. The top 4 point earning teams at the end of a qualifier will play in a collegiate final. An additional 24 teams will qualify based on having the top overall scores across all matches in the opens. Scores are separate for build vs. zero build- these are separate tournaments and competitions.

Counter-Strike 2
This is a first-person tactical shooter. All players have the same base abilities in the game. This game focuses on skill in using the items and weapons available. It is important that proper items and weapons are chosen at the start of each round to be used strategically. Players work together on teams of five to try to eliminate the other team or plant the bomb and have it go off when attacking as the terrorists. When defending, as the counter-terrorists, teams try to prevent the other team from planting the bomb (including by eliminating the other team before they can plant the bomb) or disarm the bomb in time with the defuse kit so the terrorists' bomb cannot go off. Players generally need to maintain certain roles so they can work together effectively and good communication and teamwork are key to winning. Teams of five play against other teams of five and try to take out the enemy team. You can choose from an array of weapons and items during the buy phase between matches. There are no special abilities from individual characters. Running and gunning is not effective. You must stop moving to aim well. This game has the added tactic of counter strafing- you need to push back the opposite direction from where you started strafing to the side in order to stop quickly & gain good aim back. You must win a total of at least 13 rounds to win a match- set as best of 24 in this game. If both teams tie at 12 to 12, the match goes into overtime and the first team to win 16 rounds wins. The maps used for each match are decided upon through a series of bans from each team. The first to win the best of 3 matches is the winner for that day's competition.

League of Legends
This is a multiplayer online battle arena game or MOBA. Players choose a particular character with four abilities that can have their own advantages and disadvantages. These abilities are gradually activated and enhanced as the character levels up throughout the game. Players can strategically choose weapons, armor & items that work best for their individual character and purchase upgrades as they earn more gold. Two summoner spells can be chosen at the beginning of the game and can be changed through various means to add other strategic abilities. Each of the five players on the team has their own position in the game- top, mid, bot, support, and jungle. These positions refer, in part, to the 3 main lanes you can travel down to get to the enemy side you are trying to attack. The top lane is somewhat easier to defend and is mostly handled by a single character. The middle lane is very short and is also handled by a single character much of the time. The bot or bottom lane is harder to defend and so has the bot position and a support to assist there. The support assists the bottom lane but will sometimes rotate over to the mid and help out otherwise strategically later in the game. The jungle runs around in the areas between the lanes, called the jungle. This area has many creatures to kill that can help gain gold and experience to level up as well as open up abilities and bonuses that can help the entire team. Additionally, the jungle will often come out to assist the other various lanes to help gank, or trap and kill an opponent overwhelming them by catching and attacking them with more force from the additional character. This is another source of gold and experience. Teams must constantly communicate to strategically act against their opponents and respond to their attacks. Placement of vision devices to see where the enemy is and reporting what is seen to others is very important as well. Information is key to winning as much as communication. The teams ultimate goal is to defend their own nexus on their side of the map while destroying their opponents' nexus. A series of towers must be destroyed to access the nexus and destroy it. These towers will shoot at and do significant damage to all enemies to their side. There is an outer, inner & inhibitor tower in all three lanes. At least one inhibitor must be destroyed before the nexus can be attacked and will regenerate after being destroyed. The nexus continually spawns minions that attack you from the enemy side and help you attack from your side every 30 seconds. These can be used to distract the tower and to do damage to opponents. Destroying enemy minions helps gain gold and experience to level up. Also, after an enemy inhibitor is destroyed your team's minions become more powerful and do more damage. Once the enemy nexus is destroyed, you win. There is only one map that is used for competition. Characters are banned by both teams through a series of choices by either side for a total of 3 each. Players should get familiar with at least 3 characters so they have backups to play if their preferred character gets banned from that match. The first to win the best of 3 matches is the winner for that day's competition.

PUBG Mobile
This is a battle royale game. Teams try to survive till the end & take out all other opponents. In the squads format we compete in, teams of 4 play against 16 other teams of 4.
The meta strategies for vehicles, weapons & items change less frequently than Fortnite but at times changes can be significant such as mechs added in. Players enter the island diving off an airplane & can basically start wherever they choose on the map. They are vulnerable to attack as soon as they land. The playzone is the area you are allowed to play in. It gradually closes in to a smaller and smaller circle and later shifts position too. The middle of this circle serves as a safe zone. If you are outside the playzone, outside the circle, you receive damage. Each round of the circle shrinking also makes the damage from outside the safe zone become more severe. Running & gunning, moving while you shoot, is effective in this game. This game is played in the form of tournaments on the weekend. There are 3 qualifier tournaments per season. Each tournament consists of 3 matches. Teams earn 1 point per elimination of an opponent. Teams also earn 10 pts for winning & 6 pts for second. Third through eighth place earn points running from 5 for third down to 1 for eighth. Other placements earn no points. The top 32 cumulative point earning teams at the end of all three qualifiers will play in a collegiate semi-final. In the semi-final, there are two groups of 16 teams each. The top 16 teams from semi-finals go on to the grand finals. The grand finals are held with a total of 6 matches played over two days. At all stages, you must play the mobile version of this game.

4v4 Chess
This is the classic game of Chess but played as a team for a collective score. There are a total of 4 sets played. In the first set, each of the four players from one team play against a different player from the other team. In the following sets, they swap their opponents until every player on the one team has played every player on the other team. The team that reaches a score of 8.5 first is the winner. The game is played in a 5+2 format. This means each player has a total of 5 minutes to make all their moves in the game. When they complete a move their timer stops & they gain back 2 seconds of time. The timer only starts running when it is their turn. In the event of a tie (8 to 8) on the 4th set, the 4th set is repeated with black and white sides swapped in a 3+2 format. If they still tie, then set 4 is repeated in a 1+2 format repeatedly until one team comes out ahead. Usually, a max of 5 sets need to be played.
